The development of this game has taken a lot of time, and has been remade at least twice since its beginnings.
The story is quite interesting to hear, and confusing, but yet amusing, as Doom 4 started as a Call of Duty-inspired game, which would include cinematic scenes, scripted sequences and everything that makes a Call of Duty game. After a while, developers weren't that happy about their product, so they revised it and started from scratch.
After the launch of Rage back in 2011, the team went back to Doom 4, and started one more time from scratch as they weren't satisfied with how the game was at that point. At this point in time, they canceled development for Rage 2 and tried to merge Rage and Doom development teams in order to get an enhanced Doom 4.
The team has some good ideas for the game, including the one about it being "as big as Skyrim", but work these ideas with such a big team has been tough for the developers, adding the fact that some of the most experienced developers have left the team during 2012.
Bethesda said in a statement:
"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect. As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”
After all this struggling, the project is still alive, as seen on the quote, and aiming to be a part of the next-gen games, even though there is no release date, nor many details, it is known that Zenimax has issued an ultimatum which might get the project on the run, faster this time.
What would you like to see happening with this game? What are your expectations for it?
