Does a fat PS3 work without the disk drive?

I bought a fat ps3 from ebay for 30€ and the disk drive is missing. The Console boots up but it gets stuck at the update screen. Will the Console somehow work without the disk drive or do i have to buy replacement parts?

Its a PAL model CECHG04

You do need replacement.
