How to use PS3 controller with my laptop?

I have a PS3 controller and would like to use it on my pc to play games. I also have the usb charger cord which i assume i need to set it up with. Could someone please tell me how to set it up so i can play games because just plugging it in doesn't work. Also links to any programs required would be great. Step by Step instructions please guys. You need the Program DS3 Tool. With this you can connect your PS3 Controller on your pc/notebook.
