FIRST:check to see what type of graphics card (this will not work if you hav an onboard video controller, so if you do, you will have to use a 3rd party program & this guide is useless to you). to do this, right click the desktop>properties>settings and if it says anythin along the lines of "xxxxx monitor on radeon xxxxx" or "nvidia xxxxx" then you have a "seperate" video card...
[Ati Radeon users]
2)for ati radeon users, download a utility called HydraDM (hydra desktop manager) from
,though it should be on the cd that came with the card...3)install it and then run HydraDM properties in start menu click "load multidesk" and "load desktop manager"
4)now set up some options in the other tabs (eg some hotkeys to switch desktops, wallpapers for each desktop-up to 32 desktops max, lol)
5)now your set really, all you gotta do it press the designated hotkey or scroll the mousewheel and it changes to a different desktop, without any programs on it at all. and the best thing is that CO doesnt DC unlike with 3rd party tools. depending on the hardware of your PC,it may switch in a milisecond, or may take 3-5 secs...the computer ive tested it on has a amd 1.7ghz cpu and 512mb of ram-and a radeon 9550 256mb,and it switches in under 1sec.
[For nvidia users]
NOTE:i dont hav a nvidia card anymore so i may be a lil sketchy at some details,xD...
1)right click desktop >properties>settings>advanced>desktop manager and then click whatever it is that activates it,xD..
2)use the wizard or configure it yourself to how many desktops you want, wallpapers, hotkeys etc..
3)your done xD...
4)for a more "comprehensive" guide, go to page 63 of this pdf document...
but remember that this applies to the latest forceware drivers, so it may differ if u have old drivers...Hope i helped some of you out there, please feel free to give +k
EDIT:here are the links to the latest drivers...
