the ole +1 earring trick, it's been going on STILL in many servers, it's because they usually use +1 Lv15 Earrings, which doesn't have purple text to signify it's plusness. They replace the earring with another, and you just "think" it's +1 because it's the same earring, but without the +1, it's the same reason magicians get away with tricks, sleight of hand

Hmmmm... I was wondering HOW this guy made this: He tried to trade me a elite item with a socketed super gem (which I will leave out due to tracking issues). I have not recieved any Item.dat files from anyone, nor did my friend (who lives in the Philipenes, I'm in US) recieve or change the item.dat file. (I might be referring to the wrong file, but i'll go on) Anways, we figured it was a scam due to a couple of factors:
1. He wasn't broadcasting his sales but whispering to higher levels and opening up trade with them.
2. Naked except for a pickaxe (:P)
3. He first wanted to 10 DBs from me, then he was willing to trade it for 2 DBs and a refined dragon gem.
4. He ran off when we closed the sale and broadcasted scammer, which of course he didn't bother replying to. He was probably freaked out because one of the higher levels he tried to trade with knew who his real character was.
I am just wondering HOW he would be able to show that item in my trade window, my friends window, AND some other peoples without modifying and sending the item.dat file around... I thought you could only scam people who had the corrupt item.dat file YOU sent them?

I'm confused, so you didn't actually buy them? so how do you know it was a hack?
Most nubs with high level gear to trade are usually high level players who don't want their main accounts banned for scamming.
Second of all, if it's a new server, it's actually pretty common for socketed items to appear, since most people spam mets in TC like no ones business. It happened on every single new server I've ever participated in.
They sucker you in with a high price, yet a still a good price for an item to lure you in, and once you start doubting, they start going "ok ok, how about XXX and XXX for the Socketed XXX" then you bite, you get your items and he trades you, yet this time, he drops in normal XXX and you don't think anything of it, because you just looked at it, and just drop your DB's/items into the trade box and click ok.
I see people scammed by this and call bloody murder, that the guy hacked the trade boxes, or that they "forced" a switch, because they saw the +1 item/socketed item/super/elite/etc in the box, but really they didn't.
Itemtype.dat is only for item quality, not plus or socketed qualities, those are added server side, as will itemtype.dat be soon as I suspect. Next thing you know people are going to complain that somone h4x0red their stats because they can't kill bladeghosts at Lv10.
Out of the 3+ years I've been playing, I have yet to see someone make a hack to show a false item in a trade window, or maybe there is I just didn't look like an easy mark, I dunno. My point being, never trade unless the item->price seems normal and the person is reputable or not a nub with a pickaxe.
I know your post was to illicit a reason for someone being able to display such an item in your trade window, but since you said he "tried" selling it to you, maybe someone that ACTUALLY bought the item and checked the window before the trade completed to make sure the item was true, could post their story, since you really don't know whether if you did trade, that the item would have "changed". Like I said earlier, he could just be trying the ol "switcheroo" tactic. As bait and switch would be easier than hacking a trade window just to cop off a few ref drags and money, as those kind of trades are traceable, most the time, it's money or couple DB's and it's usually small amounts to avoid flagging anything unusual, I've actually seen people get turned down by GM's during scams because they were scammed for 1kk for a pair of refined earrings that they thought were elite, due to the switcheroo, if the scammer does it right, they can ply off the wares and seem to be a "normal" trade and not get any flack for it.
Like the Panacea/Vanilla/Pots Boxes selling for 1.5-2kk to pawn off as MoonBoxes/AncientBoxes/Etc, and HairDye as CleanWater, the switcheroo tactic is coming back more than ever, and sadly, many of those have been suggested through this forum. So I say this, Karma, the more people come out with hacks and bots, and some release the sources, the more black hats you'll see picking up your pieces, so careful what you suggest or say, or you may be a victim.
sorry for such a long post, felt kinda ranty today.
