Servers generally do not have graphics cards. They are designed to run server side applications (web, database, chat, game, login servers for examples). It's highly unlikely you'll be able to run conquer on a traditional VPS.
If you're determined to try, your first hurdle will be getting directx working on the server. If you cant do that then it's a 'no go'. The client will complain if directx/direct3d/directsound arent working properly on the host.

What do you mean by "how could they do that?" Chris already answered this: they have video cards. It's a hardware requirement. You're not going to get around that without buying a very specific VPS with video card support. They usually call them "GPU cloud computing" solutions.

False. For the third time now, you need a hosted GPU server.
What is this even for?

No matter what his requirements are, he's going about it *** backwards
Option 1: He wants to connect from VPS so that he can leave his bot/character running while his computer is offline. This is an acceptable use I suppose but you'll end up with it being much cheaper to simply keep your computer running (or even buy an ancient piece of **** computer to run it with)
Option 2: He wants to hide his characters/mask his ip/etc in which case he should simply use a vpn (or set up his own vpn to route his traffic through his server)
GPU based server hosting is VERY expensive both because it is a niche service and because those who are wanting to use GPU processing are looking for very powerful number crunching (gpu's are very good compared to traditional CPUs for certain intensive math calculations).
Renting a GPU based server will cost far more than any other (more reasonable and easier to implement) solution.

That's why I asked. I was going to recommend just leaving a laptop running or something. I do things formally at work, so I don't know of any workaround for this. If there's another solution, why not just tell him the answer? I see no purpose in hiding something like this.

My wording may have been weird. The 'easier and cheaper workaround' is to leave a computer running locally. If you're desperate buy a SUPER cheap pc (100-300 bux) and remote into that to manage the clients. It'll cost less than renting a GPU server and still have all the benefits of not worrying about leaving your computer running.
That or using a VPN if it's a ip/bot related thing.

Ah, yeah. I think that's why some people were asking about getting Conquer running on Linux (since a Raspberry Pi is super cheap and has a decent little GPU). An Intel Compute Stick would be a pretty ok solution. I don't understand why a VPN would come in handy though. Does TQ check IP addresses for VPS providers?

I'm confused as to what you're saying.. a VPN would be handy if his goal is just to hide his IP address from TQ (so they wont know who his mains are). Either use a VPN service or host his own VPN from his VPS to connect through.
That being said, TQs client protection pulls so much personal data from your PC that they'd still prob find your mains to ban but trying to connect from a diff IP was one of the few uses I could see for a VPS and a VPN would do the job just as well.

Ah, yeah. That makes sense. I wasn't thinking about mains and such.
