Would using VPN improve my ping?!

Well, I live in the middle east, Egypt, and it's a far distance from Egypt to California (where Conquer servers are) so my latency and ping sucks, my average ping is 300-800 so, I heard a rumor from some gamers that using a VPN close to Co servers would improve your game ping and latency. I couldn't really fully understand how it works, but what I got is using a VPN (tunneling as far as I understood) would make a direct connection from my pc to the VPN server so it won't have to go through all the hops.
A totally different opinion said that using a VPN would just add another hop to my connection so adds more ping.....

Here is one opinion I got that might help

Quote:
I thought a very basic illustration of how proxies can provide you a Lower Ping, Reduced Lag or Latency Fix would be a great way to showcase how the whole process works.

I will use a VPN-ed PC's connection to demonstrate this (please note that these old images were originally used for other purposes):

This was the default route used by the user's ISP to get to this particular server. You can see that it was using a terrible route that was causing major latency (lag) issues for the user trying to access this server.

This new image below shows the user's traffic being forced to use our VPN's superior routing instead. Look at how the first hop's IP has changed to 10.8.0.1. This is the VPN's gateway IP for our VPN users. Notice the first hop now has a ping of 185ms. This is because the traceroute program thinks our VPN is the first hop when it actually isn't! The last hop now has a ping of 227ms instead of the original 602ms. Look at how the route has changed completely and is now "lag-free"! A reduction of 63%!! In fact, we've upgraded to an even better network now!

I hope this helps you understand how our Proxies and VPNs work!

I hope that would help me decide whether to use or not use VPNs.......

Thanks in advance
Mostafa

ping 'in game' might be lower,but that dossent account for the time it takes the vpn to reply to you

Ping ends up higher, even in-game, the Conquer client calculates ping by the timestamp it recieves in the packet, and it will still take X amount of time for the packet to travel from Egypt all the way to the VPN and through it to the Conquer server.

So in short, no, a VPN wont decrease your Ping.

He's absolutely right. But a VPS hosted in USA would definitively help you. (but the graphic refresh speed would be lousy, this solution could be useful only for running CoG or CoF clientless).

at first thought the theory of 'tunneling' through a vpn seems like it would help because you aren't bouncing around to a ton of different connections to get to tq server... but if you spend even a second thinking about it, you're just doubling your problem.

Your Computer >> Vpn = Bouncing all over the place to connect to your vpn

VPN >> Tq Servers = bouncing all over the place to connect to the TQServers

So really you're just changing your problem. As already stated the only time it would be helpful is if you then just ran the client/bot on a vps closer to the server location.

Just about any vps could handle running conquer so you could just bot using that or you could use a standalone bot as was suggested to bot far more effectively then you could from your own computer with your massive latency.

Best of luck,
P4N

Keep in mind you will NOT be able to play properly off of a vps. You will get the equivalent of about 5 fps if you tried. The most you could do is use a vps to bot with (the bot would run faster and not get dc'd)

The only real way to lower your ping would be to switch to the international servers of conquer. They host them in just about every language and world location.

Yeah, I know, I'm gonna use it mainly for clientless botting

PC => VPN => SERVER
PC <= VPN <= SERVER

Nope, not faster.

If you mean that

I've already applied it but it didn't improve my latency/ping as I expected, so I guess I'm just gonna get a VPS
