I've been coding for a while, but I learned something before I started coding about private servers that not many people know about. I'd like to share that with you and hopefully help you make a stronger private server.
I'm going to be making a lot of references to my server so don't say I'm bragging. It's the only example that I have to work with other than my friend's old server which failed.
Beta Testing & Truth:
Truth is very important in beta testing. I know that my friend Larry has always been a truthful guy to me so I trust him to help me beta test Conquer New Dawn. There was a time where all of the players were taking advantage of a problem with my composition system which gave them free +1's. He gave them back and told me the problem. It's beta testers like that that you really need to help you out.
What if your server has a trust problem? Well, I had a trust problem with one of my players once. I resolved it by showing the amount of work I put into the server and the appreciation I have for the player when he helps out.
It's worth handling these cases when you can see your players happy with the work you put into the server.
Backing your server up!
Back up your server!!
<< Your server doesn't have a magic restore button! You need to back up your server at least once a day! If you don't, you might have some very angry players.
How a server usually fails:
The most failure servers are the 5165 servers. There are so many of them out there that there's extreme competition. You should try to make a server on an older or newer patch. 5095 is a popular one but many people don't like ninjas... so why not try 5070? Something along those lines. There's a ton you can chose from... however, this is not why a server fails.
TQ is the perfect example of a failing server. They're staff is so stupid and so mind-blowingly fail, that there server is dying. The staff can't see that the power distribution is off. Power distribution is what KILLS a server. If someone has too much power, they can pk everyone and anyone in the server with one hit. This makes it less fun for other people knowing they can't be a GM and get that power too. if you give GM status to everyone, the serer fails just as hard. Everyone one hits everyone. Fail-fail situation. It dies quickly, so please take my advice on it (from my friend's failed server).
Server at heart:
You don't need gears to own- only a heart.
Example? Sure. In real conquer online, I was a full super +5 ninja- none of the +12 people would touch me. Nobody would. I could walk through a guild war in the enemy guild and not die. Why? I took time to get to know everyone. I showed them I had a heart and I was someone they could trust. Someone actually offered to buy me +12's but I said no. I didn't need them.
Set an example for your players. Let them look up to you, but never look down on them. That's the secret. Also, make only 1 GM and no PMs. Everything should be automatic anyways!
Authority vs. Dictatorship
Nobody is perfect, you will hurt people. Everyone makes mistakes and sometimes it takes some maturing to play a server. I don't tolerate beta testers that use my errors in coding to their advantage. Make sure your players know your rules. As for me, I only have one rule...
Respect.
I'm not telling you all to go to your players and demand respect. You won't get it- that's a dictatorship. If you truly want the respect of your players then do the following:
1. Respect them. If you don't respect them then they'll hate you like G. W. Bush. Don't tell your players that you're going to do something for them and end up f*ing them over.
2. Tell them how much the server means to you and how much it means to you that they're playing it. It's called gilt. They'll love you for creating the server and they won't take advantage of your errors / bugs because of gilt. They don't want to hurt someone like that.
3. Have fun. Don't hack your way to the top, enjoy it with them.
Use your GM powers to put them in funny places where you'd never usually go.
Be yourself unless your grammar and spelling sucks.
Don't be like TQ!!
"Sorry that I am not sure about the HP either since I got killed there at once when I was there one time and then never go there, hehe."
Don't be like that- EVER!
If you have bad grammar then hire someone like me. I'll fix it for you. The people that run TQ are morons. Don't try and copy their server perfectly because it's not right!
Mistakes:
If you have a friend that has a private server where you get everything you want, does that make it right? NO.
If TQ adds something then does that make it right? NO.
If you add something does that make it right?
The answer is no.
Don't be afraid to be yourself, but look- if you make a mistake then suck it up. Admit you were wrong and change it. Nobody is perfect and it makes you imperfect if you think so.
Ok, I hope you all read this well. I enjoyed writing it for you all.
Don't be scared to know your players very well. Sometimes it's those bonds that makes a girl put the knife down and say "he gives me something to live for". You never know.
Take care, have fun, and be yourself!
Sincerely,
Fang
