To be fair... speed of the machine itself is not a concern assuming the source you're using isn't complete ****.
The VPS I'm using right now for my servers is a 6 core 6 gig ram machine (TOTALLY OVERKILL) and even with 200+ online players I'm running like 3-4 pct cpu usage. That's using my old redux based source. Something written properly from the ground up will use even less.
Network location, peering partners, attack filtering etc are way more valuable than raw VPS stats
