I assume your talking about hosting from a home computer (which is more fail) since no dedicated hosts would sell you a 2.1 ghz core 2 duo, with 512mb ram & 30gb hdd. a cheap VPS would with the CPU being shared to 10 other people, which is worst than a home computer.

I'm talking about a Vps, I've used many in the past and they all worked out pretty well. Yes a dedi would be much better but not many can afford that per month. For a server with 100-500 players, a vps seems like a sufficient host for me. Yea that is old technology, but not that old. I remember when my dad bought a compaq desktop with 11 gb hard drive, pentium 2 processor @ 500 mhz and I think 256 ram for around $4000 from sears. That was in 1998.
1gb+ ram became common in the past 2 years. My new computer is an HP desktop with Core 2 Quad at 2.8, 8 gig ddr3 ram, 760 gb raid hd, and nvidia 9800 1g graphics card which is a *** compared to computers 6+ years back.
Back to the subject, if your server will have more than 400 players on at any given time and you want to ensure there is no lag, freeze, and low ping then dedi is the way to go but a decent dedi was around $99 the last time I checked.

Do you mean the best commercial host, the best offer on hosting (meaning good host for a good price), or just the fastest internet?
Pretty sure you can't afford the first and last one.

Lol I'm talking about the actual internet speed on the vps not the port. We all have gigabit ports nowadays. The 1/1 internet on vpsland held about 70-100 players with no one lagging or more than 300 ping. But that's just from my experience.

I would rather have a 15,000 rpm 30GB hdd than a 1tb 7200rpm drive, and the same for the ram.
And @ the guy speaking about 10Mbit internet in the 70s? Back in the 70s you couldnt get any form of ISP to offer you anything due to the lack of infrastructure, even in the 90s it was difficult even for corporate companys to afford faster than 10Mbit LAN, let alone internet, and in alot of countrys faster than 10Mbit internet is impossible because of the lack of infrastructure (still), the UK only really got past 10Mbit in the last couple of years, the fastest realistic option atm is Virgin Broadband 50Mbit, but really you dont get 50Mbit, and you have to have your front garden dug up in order to have the cable put in.
Where i work we use a fibre link that goes accross the town and back to the BT exchange in town, and thats 10Mbit and costs like £5000 a year to rent from BT, we are switching to a collection of ISDN lines from BT which will be abit cheaper, the plus side is were getting 20Mbit.
So yeah, not everyone has lightning fast internet, and honestly unless your atually going download something at 6MB a second (50Mbit) then theres no point in having "Fast" internet, because your ping will be identical from 1mbit -> 1gbit -> 1tbit, all thats changing is your capacity, not latency.

i was talking about your regular 7200rpm drive (which is exactly what he was talking about)
They also don't make 15k rpm drives, however an SSD and were talking.

my mistake, was supposed to say they don't sell them in 30GB one's. however HDDs like them won't be around much longer. SSD's are getting cheaper & up to 20x + faster than that.
