I feel like i'm stalking pro today lol. Hi pro!
Pro is right again - but he gave you the short answer I think.
This is new territory for me - finishing pro's sentences so I'll try my best.
You can deviate to my knowledge a bit forward and backwards in patches but it all comes down to the packet structure. 5508 and 5165 are different structures - 5165 and 5167 are not. Hope that makes sense. So you can play with it a little bit and line the versions up as long as the packet structure and BF and such are correct you'll be able to connect.
But what it seems you are really asking is if you can take one of the popular 5165 servers here and run a 5508 client on it the answer is a strict NO out of default because even if it IS possible you'd be starting with someone elses work and that 1/2 proves you don't have the necessary skill to invent some quirky new way (dunno if this is possible just throwing things out there) such as modifying the structures or translating them to match inside your proxy or somethin'.
BTW not a flame - because I'd be in the same boat without the necessary skill to do such a task. Tried once to understand packet structures - nearly died.
