Setting up New Server

Hello!

I am new to creating private servers. I know if this is the right way to ask but if you guys can help me by answering my questions I would be very grateful!

1. Can we make private servers on 64 bit windows 7 or it only works on 32 bit system?

2. I tried to search already for tut on how to create one but I always end up with "Server Maintenance or Network is Congested. Try again later."

Yes, you can run one on windows 7 64 bit, it's what I use and I have had no issues.
If you have issues, do a search, I believe Fang has a thread somewhere that resolves that issue.

And it depends on your server. Some servers require you to have a config file specific to the PC you are running pointing to specific IP's. Some only require the IP addresses and ports be changed inside the source.
Your conquer client also needs to point to those same IP addresses, usually done through ConquerLoader (search function will help you find that).

Generally speaking, I would use Hamachi for the IP address to save you playing with ports and having to have them open.

And if you do not know anything about programming in C#, then I would strongly suggest taking some tutorials otherwise you will have not be able to make any modifications to your server.

But without knowing which server you are using, its hard to give you specifics.
Most source's include a tutorial on how to set them up, I would look there first.

I understand that setting a private server can't be done overnight unless you ask someone else to do it for you.

I am making myself ready to learn C#. If you can point me to some tuts much better I know I need to do my research.

I stopped playing the official conquer for years already and I don't know how to play with it these days due to recent changes. I can hardly understand what to do with the new skills and classes. This is why I wanted to create one. I think I am better to start with 5165 or is there any you can recommend for me as a beginner to start with?

I am very serious in creating one but I don't want to be overwhelmed so I want to take it one at a time.

Thanks for guiding me with your knowledge and tips.

well in fact setting up a private server should not take more than couple of mins if you know what you are actually doing, but in case you don't then you need to learn programming in the first place because just setting up the server will get you no where

I suggest going with one of the mid range sources in that case. Worry less about what features are done and more about stability and ease of editing.

NCOS/LOTF sources are famous for being cobbled together by many different editors and as such can be very difficult to make changes to fix bugs or add features.

Something like Redux (my 5065 source), some of the project X sources or hybrid's various releases would be best for learning programming and act as a solid base for your server.

If you use something like trinity edits, ncos, lotf then everything is technically done for you but it will be buggy and filled with issues.

@pro4never

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I don't want to tackle editing for now. I want to purely understand and learn how to deal a basic server and from there on expand. Yes, I needed something that is best for learning programming but what is project X I was able to read about your Redux (5065) and couple of hybrid's version.

I just have an issue about 5065 as I heard there's a bot for this type created by ultimation? I need some clarifications on this and would be very thankful if you can tackle about this.

Lastly, what is with XNA or what is it with developing game in C# using XNA? "just curious" here.

5065 bots you hear about are binary sources. Using any custom source means you can fix any exploits or stop any bots users attempt to write. It's just not something you should be concerned with.

Redux is a playable server but is still base. There are missing features waiting to be coded by members of EPVP but all the core features are in place, tested and working properly and in many cases working far more accurately to official servers than other public sources.

XNA is a game development framework developed by microsoft for the .net languages (focusing on C#). It's no longer supported by them and is now considered dead. At this point you may as well just stick with directx/opengl or other frameworks if you want to do game dev. It was fun to work with but there's just no point now that it's not supported.

it doesn't matter what version you use to learn, any source will always be vulnerable as much as binaries were (binaries is the 5065 sources that ulti. made the tools for them), you should more likely care about logical exploits in your code than leak at cryptography or source stability as tbh there isn't many who knows alot about them in conquer community

Based on all of your advice I was able to list what I should study.

1. Conquer Wiki
2. Learning basics of C#
3. Choosing Source and finding client.
4. Learn how to install
5. Then I can start to study advanced C# be learning more about the game and how to troubleshoot.

To me learning what exactly the game is and how you troubleshoot will help me get a good grasp and the idea what to do next in the future for edits.

Let me know if I sound realistic or there's more you can share to me.

I am thankful for all your guides, tips and advice. I look forward to you mentors!

Acctually the List would make much more sense in that order:

1.Learning basics of C#
2. Learning advanced C# (troubleshooting is basic knowledge)
3. Conquer Wiki
4. Write your own source if possible or choose one.
5. Profit.

I used to do it that way:

1. Get source
2. Learn basics
3. Get Source
4. Get Source
5. Quit
6. Learn basics
7. Learn advanced stuff
8. Write own source
9. Be happy.

You can clearly tell how stupid I was and how much it delayed everything.

@Yuki

I will try to consider your advice. It does make sense but I'm wondering if I study and don't have some exercises along the road. Will I learn as much as others do?

If you are new to programming I recommend this site:

You wont be able to set up your server from scratch after reading all of it (Its not much and easy to follow) but you definitely should be able to understand a lot of what you are seeing in most sources.

After that you should look for something more advanced. I kinda got bored of reading and decided to mess around with C# on my own and fail 100s of times before I finally get something that works but I don't recommend doing the same as I am doing now

I definitely recommend just as with learning basicly anything to not just read a book but have something that actually makes you do and figure out things on your own.
