I've had a few people suggest to me, as well people working on the project that we should consider running a server with CSV3. Considering this isn't me just coding it this time, I for see this project going very far and not dieing off like CSV2 did (I carried that pretty far on my own in my opinion).
So, the question at hand is should CSV3 stay an open-sourced project, or should we turn it into an actual server (which then in, it would become closed-source). The server arguably would follow a logical transition of being command based as CSV2 was until all the features for a leveling server were fully incorporated. A leveling server would be launched parallel to the other server so it wouldn't hinder people already playing. If we do create a server, binary copies of the server may be available in the future, but no source will be (themida ftw).
The only reason I'm posting this is because I see a lack of good servers besides the server that Impulse is running. Thoughts? Feedback? The results of this poll do not necessarily govern our actions, but rather give us a sense of what is preferred.
It is very important to note that even is CSV3 went closed-source, we would still be accepting people who were interested in contributing to server development, as well as coders (though the policy for coders would be more strict). It can also be noted that if the server was not successful, it is likely we would return to being open-sourced. And lastly, our test/PvP server up will not have progressive game play revolving around PvP (for instance, the newest version of Acid CO incorporates "ACO Points" won through tournaments) -- Any tournaments or events held on this server will be for purely for fun. There will be no real benefit from participating in tournaments or any other events in terms of affecting game play (think back to how CSV2 was traditionally when it first came out; Everyone was even).
I think we have a lot of resources at our disposal. We have plenty of examples and most of use who care about development know how to implement the correct methods. I'd really like to see a good server. I haven't found a good private server worth my time yet.
Sad to say, The people who have opted for open source here just want it for simple greed, I would say it is your work, maybe someone, somewhere, would possibly* benefit, however it is your call.
I'd suggest make a server, there might be more of a goal to achieve so you're more likely to complete/improve it more. On top of that it will be a lot of work and most people will just leech it and use it without any changes, rather than learning from it like it should be used.
But I would also suggest, that if you guys ever stop development and decide it will be permanent release source (with bugs if you want to control noob leeching) for others to learn from.
Closed source, active server. If the source is to be released, it should be done either: as you said, in binary format (though Themedia (did I spell that wrong?) is still unpackable given a more skilled reverse engineer.); later on, after the project has been available for some time; or as others said, updated at certain points, maybe milestones.
Edit: @Korvacs - Kiyono or Lat could get you a list if you really wanted to laugh at it.
Strange. If I remember correctly, vBulletin has to store the name/userID in the votes database so people can't vote twice, and there's a link a mod (or maybe it's an admin) can click to see a list of names.) It's possible they disabled it, though.
Anyway, I would have to agree that a good percentage of the people wanting it to stay open just want the code.
VBulletin definately does, but you have to specify it when creating the poll, and here at epvpers that option isnt present on creation so they are never stored
