I've messed with that client sided restriction alot, The only reason i think its client sided restriction is because with a rename card/server transfer in N/A cabal, you can include any special character you want, including [ ] which can be used for inappropriate means such as impersonating GM.
I'm not sure about "ALT characters" but for sure normal characters will work, like ~ through +, and all the normal characters on your keyboard. I've not been able to get the restriction disabled. Back before illusion castle 1 patch, GMs had this patch to remove all ! marks from names because of concerns it could corrupt the database in certain scenario, however since you can add them in via website server transfer, or rename card, I guess they are not concerned about it anymore.
to be honest its not worth the effort probably, even if you did get it off - you wont last long with GM tags ect...
i did manage to obtain it from server transfer from global to NA and i used it for a while messing with peolpe in ch20 ect
ofcourse it didn't take long for her to report me to GMs either..
