GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program, ursprünglich: General Image Manipulation Program[1]) ist ein kostenloses und freies Bildbearbeitungsprogramm. Es steht unter der GNU General Public License (GPL).

Der Schwerpunkt der Software ist die intensive Bearbeitung einzelner Bilder, wofür vielfältige Effekte („Filter“) zur Verfügung stehen. Neben der Version für GNU/Linux und Unix existieren auch Portierungen auf Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X und AmigaOS 4.

Die erste öffentliche Testversion von GIMP wurde von Peter Mattis am 21. November 1995 auf der Liste comp.os.linux.development.apps angekündigt.[2] Zusammen mit seinem Kommilitonen Spencer Kimball hatte er das Programm als Studienarbeit entwickelt. Die erste Betaversion wurde für Linux (1.2.13), Solaris (2.4), HP-UX (9.05) und IRIX bereitgestellt. Die erste offizielle Version 0.54 erschien im Januar 1996.

Dieses war am anfang kostenpflichtig und für alle Systeme.
Dann aber kam PS heraus und niemand benutzte mehr GIMP sondern PS.
Also machten sie aus Gimp ein kostenfreies Programm.

Die einzigen Nachteile von GIMP sind das,die Bild Quallität bei dem erstellen von "jpeg" verschlechtert wird.

I think for users, who only make Signatures and Profilepics it´s better they get Gimp^^
