Engineer Profession Overview
GW2 Engineer Profession Overview
The Engineer Profession (or Engineer Class) in Guild Wars 2 is somewhat unique to any other MMO playable today. They are masters of mechanical items, weapons and machines, making them unique to any other profession in GW2. As an Engineer, you will have the ability to use gadgets, elixirs, explosives, turrets, grenades and a combination of many other different types of ‘mechanical’ abilities to lash at your foes. The Engineer is a Adventurer Profession, making use of medium quality armor for its gear.
GW2 Engineer Abilities
Just like Batman has his Utility Belt, the GW2 Engineer uses its tool belt to his advantages. The tool belt appears above your skill bar, making use of ulities and healing skills to cast damage to your opponents or used to heal one’s self.
GW2 Engineer Unique Skill Types
The Engineer uses a unique set of skill types below:
Weapon kits — these are a type of utility skill that replaces the currently equipped weapon (and their skills) with a new weapon. There are three weapon kits available; the Flamethrower, the Elixir Gun, and the Tool Kit.
Device kits — these are a type of utility skill that replaces the currently equipped weapon (and their skills) with more specialized skills. There are four different device kits in total; the Bomb Kit, the Grenade Kit, the Med Kit, and the Mine Kit.
Turrets — deploy immobile allied devices that help defend and control an area. The amount of active turrets is limited by the amount of turret skills equipped, though only one turret of each type can be active at the same time. Turrets can be packed up and moved to different locations by interacting with it, and triggered to self-destruct by using the skill again. Each turret also grants a Tool belt skill to improve the turret’s effectiveness; For example, the Rifle Turret’s tool belt skill is Automatic Fire.
Elixirs – these are a type of skill, which induces a random effect upon its use. These random effects are dependent upon the skill used as the skill determines the pool of possible effects. Tool belt skills are always a modified version of the corresponding elixir, that can be thrown to effect allies as well.

Why play an Engineer
Love blowing stuff up? Well then this profession is definitely for you. The Engineer is an extremely unique profession to the world of MMO’s. It uses a combination of machines and magic, with turrets blasting incming enemies with missiles and bullets, and equipping themselves with pistols, rifles and shields, one simply must know that the Engineer is the line between modern destruction and arcane brilliance. It is a ranged profession meaning it is not overly melee orientated so if you don’t like ranged, stay away from the Engineer!
Utilities Explained
In addition to your weapon, you an have assortment of utility skills in the form of Kits and Turrents. When you activate one of these kits, the first five skills on your skill bar are replaced with a new set of skills relating to the kit that is used. The kits themselves have no recharge time and you can swap between them at will. All of the kits add a skill to the tool belt, so you aren’t sacrificing a skill. There aren’t any restrictions on when and how often an engineer can switch between kits, because many of the engineer’s kits tend to have a very narrow, specific effect.
Below are a listed of the Kits and Turrents:
Backpack Kits:
Tool Kit
Med Kit
Mine Kit
Grenade Kit
Bomb Kit
Weapon Kits :
Flamethrower
Elixir Gun
Turrets:
Net Turret
Flame Turret
Thumper Turret
Rifle Turret
Healing Turret
Turrets
Turrents are stationary devices that can be deployed to help control or defend an area. The net turret fires nets which snare their target. The Healing Turret is very similar in power and effect to the ranger skill Healing Spring. The flame turret causes fire damage.
Turrents can be picked up and relocated. When playing with others the engineer really shines due the cross-profession combos which are possible as turrets pump out a steady flow of projectiles from a stationary position. Or for instance, consider the damage possibilities when firing a rifle turret through an elementalist’s firewall!
Backpack Kits
These utility kits when equipped, replaces your current weapon skills with a more specialized set of skills. For example, equipping a Med Kit puts a backpack on the engineer that allows them to distribute Med packs on the ground for your allies to use. Equipping a bomb kit gives the ability to deploy bombs that explode with fire, smoke or concussive effects.
Weapon Kits
These are utility skills that equip a new weapon in the engineer’s hands when activated. For example, the Elixir gun kit provides the ability to fire chemical potions which can do damage to the enemy or assist allies. The Flamethrower kit creates a short-range AOE weapon with skills like "Backdraft" to suck enemies into range of the weapon’s powerful attacks. "Immolate" will damage nearby enemies. "Napalm", burns and blinds foes with a wall of fiery napalm. "Flame Jet" sprays multiple enemies with fire while you’re on the move. "Flame Blast", fires a napalm ball that rolls towards enemies then explodes. "Air Blast" knocks back and interrupts enemies. Versatile indeed!
Tool Belt
The Engineer’s tool belt is a unique and vital in their skill’s arsenal and is displayed above the weapon skill bar. Utilising the engineer’s F1 – F4 keys the tool belt offers a matching skill for every heal and utility skill in slots 6 – 9 of their skillbar.
Elixirs
In your background, the Engineer will have a bunch of elixirs. The Elixir gun can use these elixirs but the Engineer can also equip an elixir as a utility or healing skill. One note of caution though : all elixirs have a random, unstable component. For instance, when Elixir B is consumed the skill slot is replaced by a random buff from a selected number of buffs that exist in the game. Elixir X is an elite elixir. When the engineer drinks it, he gets one of a handful of useful elite skills from another class.
Utility Skills
In addition to the above tools, there are also a number of utility skills at the Engineer’s disposal. One such skill is "Slick Shoes", which leaves an oil slick behind the Engineer as he flees, resulting in pursuing enemies slipping and falling if they step on the slick. All of the engineer’s gadgets are skills, so they take up a skill slot and use energy but require no ammo or inventory space.
Weapon of Choice
Rifle!
The weapon of choice for PvE is definitely the Rifle. The file gives you the ability to cause great amounts of damage and interest weapon skills such as Jump Shot, which lets the Engineer shoot the ground and jumps into the enemy.
Weapon Skills Leveling Guide
As we plough our way through Tyria, we want to make the most of the Rifle as our weapon of choice. This means that all of the Rifle Weapons Skills should be learnt first before any other weapon. This will give us the best combination of balanced skills to use and allow us to quickly level through Tyria as fast as possible.
When you begin leveling as an Engineer, you will not be given a rifle. But rather a Main Hand Pistol. This means you will begin your journey through Tyria with a Pistol before acquiring a Rifle from a random drop.
The first thing you should do before looking into Healing and Utility Skills is to unlock all 5 of your Rifle weapon skills.

As you’re just beginning your weapon skill leveling.

Continue using Hip Shot on single target mobs
Use Blunderbuss as frequent as possible only on situations where there are more than 2 mobs clumped together until Overcharged Shot is unlocked. Remember the closer you are to the enemy, the more damage you will deal with your Blunderbuss.
Continue using Hip Shot on single target mobs and Blunderbuss when there are more than 2 mobs clumped. You can Net Shot single targets to slow them down as well.
Once Jump Shot is unlocked, you can use them awesome ability to get close to your foes and cast a Blunderbuss followed by a Overcharged Shot and go back into spamming Hip Shot! <- this is a great combo.
Rotation will be as follow for single target DPS: Hip Shot > Net Shot > Hip Shot etc.
Rotation will be as follow for multiple targets DPS: Blunderbuss > Hip Shot > Blunderbuss> Hip Shot etc.
You should also use your 6th slot skill which is Elixir H which will heal you if you’re about to die.
