HDD grinding noise

Hi.Nice to meet you all.

I have a critical problem with my PC.i Have 2 IDE HDD's-1x40Gb and 1x160Gb.

My problem is related to the secondary 160Gb drive.Recently (3-5 days) it started to do a grinding noise once in a while.Along with it came 10 seconds of incredible lag on the PC followed by a freeze. The only solution is to restart the PC.

Earlier i got the chance to get the grinding sound while i was looking at the task manager.I noticed that the CPU dropped form an activity of 40-70% to like 1-5% until it froze.

As i have red on a few other source it might be caused by some bad sectors.
Well i have used the official Seagate software to scan the disk and it didnt find anything wrong.Did the same with a few other softwares and i got the same "clean" result.

While my little brother has been playing a game(i think Zuma or something like that) the hard started to do grind after grind without stopping-until i told him to restart.

Now this is happening very often which is really irritating.

I have to mention that i had this same problem after 1 month after i bought the HDD.I took it to them and they did a scan and didnt find anything but they formated it just in case-and it worked.

I have also scanned, formated, rescanned and the results were still "clean" but it kept making the grinding noise.

Sound description:its a sound that its really just like the word "GRIND".It lasts for 1 -1,5 seconds.

Please keep the "buy a new one advices" to your self-unlike others im not stuffed with 500$ banknotes.

Your support would be of great help.Thank you and have a nice day!

BUY A NEW ONE !

No joke man, HDDs arent that expensive, you get twice of the space you have now for ~$50.

If you don't want to loose all your saved data then buy a new.

ahem...just for you to get the idea...in romania ~50$ is about 1/4 of the average salary.romania cannot compare to other richer european countries :/

i cannot afford to spend 1/4 of my salary for a HDD that can be "repaired".i do have to pay bills and other stuff.

edit:the cheapest IDE drives of what i have searched in my near shops are around 80-90$ so that aint even close to what u said.

how old is your harddrive? can u exchange it? if yes do it. its sounds like its a hardware defect and this cannot be repaired.

if you can't exchange..how much could u spend?
