Switch Overtakes DS! - Nintendo's Best Selling Console Ever

It finally happened. Even though the Switch 2 has been on the market for six months now, the original hybrid console refuses to slow down.

According to Nintendo's latest financial report (data as of December 31, 2025), the Nintendo Switch has officially broken the long-standing record held by the Nintendo DS.

• Nintendo Switch: 155.47 Million Units
• Nintendo DS: 154.02 Million Units

The Switch is now Nintendo's most successful hardware in history. The only competitor left to beat is the PlayStation 2, which sits somewhere over 160 million units. Given the momentum, it might actually happen.

Switch 2 & The "Mario Kart Effect"

Nintendo also revealed that the Switch 2 has already sold 17.37 million units in just half a year.
The software sales data reveals something incredible - Mario Kart World has sold 14.03 million copies. That means almost 81% of all Switch 2 owners bought the game.

• Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 49.32m
• Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 37.44m
• The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 33.64m

• Mario Kart World - 14.03m
• Donkey Kong Bananza - 4.25m
• Pokemon Legends: Z-A (Switch 2 Edition) - 3.8m
• Kirby Air Riders - 1.76m

bought a switch 2 with mario card and sold it after 1 week. Such a let down

Ohhh sorry to hear that. What went wrong with your switch 2 experience?

As much as i do like the switch, i stick to emulation of games so I can mod. I do own a switch but switch 2 seems to be a money grab.. Personal thoughts on that tho.

I much prefer to emulate games on the pc if I can.. But to be fair i only play zelda and pokemon games really.

I'd say it's not a money grab if it's someone's first such mobile gaming console. If you already own the OG switch, then ... just don't upgrade yet. the OLED display is a cool addition in the OLED version by the way, but it's not like ground breaking.

Modding on switch is dead, right? Can you do anything like that on the switch alone?

Oh the game was so so boring, i did not like it all. Very long straight courses ect. that being said it was just about mario cart and not the console itself

Well.... No surprise you didn't enjoy the switch if you haven't tried more games! I feel like it'd be nice to play some RPG on it, but not a "hardcore" one. Something simple.
