Increase ess and wis to 10/12/14 only if you need to wear the RC/FD/EC relics.
With that build I have over 3000 def which is plenty for LD. If you're getting ganged, use your finishing move to quickly get away and attack a mob on its own. Never stand on the spot if mobs are ganging you. Use your range smashes to lure mobs out and fight them 1v1.
Ideally, your HP should fall at the same rate as your VE or slower.

It's really old, but great school of builds... I use the same since Acclaim :P
But on Play9D, if you are rich enough, you don't need to add points to wis/ess on start - I think you won't wear RC/FD/EC relics, because you probably will wear red&blue banners and 6xBBoE, I think. I wear that, and my dmg is nice on all types of characters.
About "ganging". I think it depends on role. Only nukers need to get away, and warriors, but sometimes. Healers and hybs (especially melee) don't need that, IMHO. It depends on buffs, as well. If you get some scale buffs, you will be like immortal. I've got my all attrib buff c12, selfbuff c12, reflect c11 and scale buff c9 (max on HM1). I'm attacked by 4 mobs and they need about 5 minutes to low my HP by 1k. I don't need to lure mobs again and again.
