I need a private server too. Best would be an installer for a "DO-IT-YOURSELF-DO-SERVER".

I'm not sure its as easy as that to write a new server from scratch.. I've been into the darkorbit source (I'm not that good at flash, but its readable..), and I couldn't find anything useful..
So making the whole game from scratch would be easier I'd say lol

The above post is quite mental and seems aggressive, however, I actually did code a 'darkorbit-game' from scratch which contains the following features: (as copied from my project lobby)
I've designed it to reflect the graphics of the new client, but shaping gameplay instead of money income lol

I doubt I will be able to share it anytime soon though, due to issues with my net, causing me not to be able to test all multiplayer features, which is the reason why I temporarily stopped developing it.

I may not have been able to cover an answer for your thread sir, but it might be of interest to you in some way.

They Way that work is develop own Game.

1. Client-Side is Readable, but it´s obfuscated. And You need a Server on these you run the Server-Side Programm.
2. No One Will do a Clone from DO because when you do it, BP will suicide you then.

The Own Way

Learn Flash or smthg like that and Learn a Language with these you can develop a quitlly brilliant and efficiant Server.

If there are no clones.. Then explain these games: Star Sonata 1 & 2, warpfire & dark legacy? There is probably more.

Thing is, you cannot copyright a gameplay style lol.
All that needs to be done is to change the sprites of everything and its legal.
