The best thing to do is actually get the texture before modelling imo.

We don't expect you to make your own textures from scratch ( although it would be awesome ) as it's really tricky and might not look as good as existing textures u could find on the net.

But then, if you already did several models without any textures, you can perfectly create your own texture in photoshop, gimp, basically any format you want ( jpeg, bmp, png, there's even a .dds plugin for max out if i remember ).

I dont know what kind of model you did, but you could for exemple draw the weapon in multiple part like for exemple, the sword part, the handle part .. then save the file, and wrap it around your model with the UV unwrap tool in 3DS

BUT, as I said, it's complicated to get a decent result, not impossible tho

Otherwise, there are much simplier ways to texture your models like modelling out of an existing weapon texture, and that's the best way for you to do it imo, it's all [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Good luck !

So ... I can't just get the 3d shape ... color it then take the colors and save them as jpg, bmp ... or any format ... I'll convert them later to dds .... but the problem is in texturing

Oh I misunderstood your issue,

Yes u can perfectly do that, in several ways more or less good and efficient:

-Exporting your UV map using UVLayout software or something else, but it's tricky, you have to separate each objects composing your model, setting and exporting them to.obj, organize the UV layout .. which can be really long and difficult.. and then being able to texture the UV map in Photoshop ..

It's clearly not worth the effort for some models for conquer in my opinion tho =/ Only use it for some complex highpoly models irrelevant to conquer, that would be a waste of time otherwise

- Using texporter, more info in [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] from Kutter

- You could just make your own texture, like paint the weapon in photoshop trying to get a similar shape to your model, and then apply the image to the model through material editor in 3DS, and use the UVW unwrap tool to adjust the maps so it perfectly fits the model,
To get the overall shape of your weapon, you could also press F9 in 3DS so you get a quick render of the model, save the image, open it up in photoshop, put a bit of transparency and start painting on another layer maybe ?

I guess there are tons of other ways to do so, best for you would be to google actually, it's not only relevant to conquer so i'm sure you'll find what u need more in depth than here
