To get a big secured server down , you need a bunch of persons and netbot if you know what is that!and also some brain...
ways to stop it : counter attack it
Talk with the host providers
Get a strong firewall , paid with some money , not cracked shit

This is not a matter of security. Your server can be 100% secure but there are always ports open and if there is an open port you can start ddosing.

Yes with some expensive hardware firewalls and running a few different servers to spread some load could help but if someone uses a botnet against your server you're pretty much screwed no matter what.

Unless the people who are dossing are retards they will probably spoof their ip if they are dossing from their own server or are at least behind a vpn if they control a botnet.

You can't see who's behind a botnet unless he is stupid enough to contact you.

Software firewall? They work against small attacks (under 50k pps or so).

That means you got attacked with programs like LOIC ...any kid can use that and bring u down if you host the server at home..

Not really expensive. <50$ for an 1 month license for a good booter. I have a lifetime license, which costed 300$. I haven't DDOSed any servers though, just tested on my own server.
And a decent protection (10gbps/1m pps) can cost 20k$ per month.

botnets are pretty cheap, protection is way more expensive. There are many zombie computers around the world.

Then why doesn't everybody have one?
