It was a dns fail.
Now they are the same.

In short details the non www. domain is faster to update on my dns servers for some reason.

with www. it can take around 4-24 hours to update.
Without www. 5m - 20 hours.
So it is a huge difference at that point.


UPDATE:
we have changed our hosting software from appache/xampp to iis. This should fix some of the downtime.
Both with and without www on the new address works.
