I'm talking about "time investing" from player side. I've got a lot of people telling me "We put a lot of time on your server, you should give us a motivation to continue doing so."

Time investing from developer side is another story, on which I agree both with you and with Muliebrity.

That explains why your server is up and running after 1 month and less than a half... oh wait!

I'm talking about getting paid for the REAL work you do, not for open a server with default features, everyone can do that and usually those kind of servers doesn't last for too long (look at yours).

My time is valuable, if you think yours is not keep doing free-silk-1-month lasting servers.

I agree with Synx7, a person or a team who manage to run a stable server and are capable of adding new features as time goes by should expect to receive a decent amount of income for their work. Server owners like synx and other teams who try to develop new features rather then just copy and pasting released / leaked databases deserve some reward without ridicule.

However, with that being said I agree with most people who complain about the servers / teams that rake in a bunch of money for little or no work during 2-6 weeks of "up-time".

From what I read this topic seems to be directed towards Skalidor... but from what I have seen everyone is angry because the staff is away for the holidays... only time will tell with them I guess, they do have a very capable team.

People forget to consider how much it costs to properly run a dedicated server. Decicated servers cost anywhere from 100-300EU/month each and hyperfilter is about another 250eu a month. domains and hosting are cheap, but web designs and programming can be expensive. I would esitmate that skalidor runs on atleast 3 dedicated servers at a cost of over $1000eu a month. Any profit they make on top of that would likely get divided among the founders (4-6 ?). so even if they make 3000-5000 a month... each founder would only get 400-800eu / month for countless hours of work.

Runs 1. Costs ~60 eur +200 if theyre using hyperfilter (which theyre not, i may be wrong). Theyre not running 3 dedis because theres no reason/requirement to.
You can only estimate how much they earn, I dont know if you ran a server yourself but its a much larger amount.

Considering their playerbase Skalidor is probably earning over 20k€/month, probably more the first month as most of the income comes the first days.

I dont think a single 60 eu dedicated could handle that much traffic without lag. I have run 3 servers all i7 32gb dedicated with up to 300 players which cost 90-150 eu depending on the host. If I had 1800-2000 players I would definately run 2-3. Running 1000 players on a very efficient database could be possible but it would have to be very good bandwidth and a very efficient database.

I was speculating, and guessing low because of the rumor of so many bots. But thats possible... I average about 600-800 usd/month per 100 players on my server(s). so multiply that by 10/20 you are correct.

They have atleast 2 dedicates, since they have over 1k users, vsro agent doesn't support more than 1k, only blackrouge works to 1500, which means they spend $550/month only for hyperfilter on the 2 dedicates, I know it's possible to run the 2nd agent on a VM but the performance is poor, and i say $550 assuming they use the minimum package from them, don't know about their dedicates specs so can't really tell.

Being in their staff chat and helping them daily, I don't know what they earn myself, but they use Hyperfilter (AFAIK)

I cant believe how much im bored of actually playing silkroad.

I love developing though, editing things, adding new features, creating website plugins for servers and talking to the players. Anything else is boring... leveling / pvp / alchemy / etc...

Why the hell we're talking about Skalidor?

Every game is made to get money. Protein shake that you drink is not made to give you muscle, it's made to earn fucking money. Every product, real or virtual, is most likely real just because of profit aims.
01/05/2014 11:20 half113#29
Every silkroad server is made to make money it's a fact and it has been so from the very beginning. Even Joymax made silkroad based on the model of making maximum amount of money out of it.Every part of sro is p2w,tho you can win by hard work alone to it's still far easier to p2w.Also it's not sro alone all online games need money to survive,Some of them might make it less obvious that they want your money at all costs, but silkroad was never known for hiding the fact that they want your money anyway.

You can run a server with 3500 slots just fine on any recent dedicated server, we currently have so much new technology (<20nm CPUs, reliable SSDs and ddr3 RAM) that was simply not available by the time silkroad was originally developed. As long as you know what you're doing you could easily run everything without much issue on a 99-150€ dedicated server (excluding ddos protection)

Recent virtualization technology is quite fast, for windows, KVM and HyperV would only take around 5% virtualization overhead, and if you're smart enough it's not even needed to use virtualization to run multiple gameservers on the same OS ;)

Everything combined, if you know what you're doing you could run a perfect silkroad server for 2000 users just fine with around a 400 euro montly budget (including dedicated server, DDoS protection, VPS, domain, etc). The other 10-20K euro they would make monthly goes directly into someone's pocket.

And then they don't even pay their taxes :o
