i have another question, what if i make auto patcher and tell players to download there client and play with my auto patcher,

but is it still illegal if i put new maps in my autopatcher which will work with co?

lets say i made a new map i wane to put that in the client and when they patch it it will modify there client again but is that still illegal

Redistributing their client is illegal. That means you'd have to re-create the entire client with your own code. If you added a map to their client, you're still redistributing their code.

So I can't redistribute a smiley face I made in paint?

Graphics != code.

It's still client modifications that you host & redistribute.

As long as you do not distribute any files from the client itself (and this includes things like an updated gamemap.dat to link your new map) then there is not a problem with it.

Your auto patcher would need to do the work itself (such as running a minor script to add a new entry to the client side files). This, I believe, gets around the issue because you are distributing your own program that patches in your own (fully custom) images, text documents and entries to certain files. If you are distributing anything created by tq in your patches or autopatch client then yes, there will be issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong though.

That being said.. I still don't see why this is even an argument. All private servers you run in a practical and public way will be illegal unless you have some form of agreement with the original game.

idk men i feel like my project might birng a bit problem coz you know it contains allot of editing and such? i just want to make sure people enjoy it and not having tq on my ass

Tq doesn't really care what you do. Look at the hundreds of binary servers running. They are breaking far more laws then you ever will be.

If it ever becomes an issue, well you shut down the server (or 'sell' the project to someone else so they can continue hosting it)
