Since some people might spend 50€ a month for their hobbies like playing golf or whatsoever without getting an income, professional AL pserver founders have to pay the server costs without donations, so you can see the server is like a hobby for them and they will care about it. I've got a concept for a working pserver without any donations, but I actually don't have time for this.
What JStrizz is saying goes for every server-project. The fact games are different in their code-structure etc. doesn't change a thing. As long as your not rich as hell and there's nothing better to spend your money on than a retarded al-pserver you WILL have to throw in the money aspect.
Nothing against the idea people will provide a decent pserver for free but we're truly talking about an idea here. I'd even rather call it a dream than an idea.
This is why not a single project became any kind of successful. People got the files and their first step is - release everything we got, no matter what. No plans were made, no future-structures, people were chosen as gms, admins, etc. that weren't competent at all.
The al community lacks in people that think from monday to sunday, not from monday to tuesday. One week got 7 days, think about it.

I agree with your point about beeing rich. Those who are sure could buy one of the best hosted servers you can get, but those people won't even see the point since they rather waste they money on webzen. Why making a pserver if all you can be the #1 on webzen? But you don't need to be rich... with my concept I wouln't even need to spend that much money on server costs.

The whole problem is you need to get rid of the NON BALANCING chantra shop items , as well as try and balance out the characters.
and one of the first things that should be done and worked on is actually fixing the ultimate goal of the game ARCHLORD him self, back to the days like EP 1/2 where the archlord could take 15+ people no problems.
Run nice server events (helps people stay interested/content)
Fix bugs (need good coders for this)
look at other games and what works
Jstrizz I think hits the nail on the head no one says you have to charge the ludicrous prices of webzen for the chantra items , if your GM's and coders are getting paid a little money here and there they will be more compliant and content to put in the endless hours it takes to update and code things (the right way)

I see a lot of argueing in this thread; everyone has a valid point though.
When we talk about private servers we all want a F2P (free to play) game, which actually gives a real meaning of the FREE part. However, there are expenses which are needed to be, at least, covered, as for example the host maintenance, which -in some cases- is really expensive.
A game environment, in a "perfect" world, would suggest that this specific part (host) is free, but it isn't; therefore, it is needed to ask for donations to the users.
These donations shouldn't give them any advantage, but should inspire them to keep playing, by giving them something -somehow- unique. There comes a lot of variables about what a server owner wants to give for these donations, which basically declares if users will like or not to play there.
One good thing to do, is make donations for "lazy" players, for example, some of the best items which can be obtained in-game with low rates or such, being added to an Item Mall (could even be web-based), so that these so called "lazy" players won't need to spend time "farming" for these items for hours while leveling, but just buy them. This doesn't give any "unfair" advantage, but motivates some players to help the server just because they don't want to spend much time trying to obtain these items.
Just like this, there are many ways of keeping a balanced environment, but it all comes down to the one who decides what will be given for donations (besides ammounts and such) and this, at some point, declares if people will like, or not, to play in said server.

@ john I see your point and ya there does seem to be a lot of arguing here something this archlord community does very well (which I am sometimes no exception to) but to get back on topic.
A lot of people in this community hate the "lazy" people the so called pay to play or credit card babies as most of us actually do the hard work for those items and that is one thing webzen has done and catered to , to make money.
IMO forsaken world has a great system at keeping the game free to play , you do have your "lazy" people but there are events everyday at designated times to collect or win valuable items in game and a great auction house and gold system to even trade gold for these items with the exception to some special ones like mounts or costumes that don't give any extra stats like they do in archlord.
Archlord as it stands now is really buggy and is built on a really old code system that a whole lot of people don't know these days and it's full of shop items that unbalance the game.
One of our main problems as well is actually getting the updated info after EP 3 when Codemasters had it. There are major changes that need to be fixed and we need great coders to fix those problems and a good hacker to get the updated files.

I will, as soon as I get some spare time, start checking into the code and server files, to get to understand the game, I am not a hacker at all, but depending on the codeing languaje of the game I will see if there is possible for me to help with it, as I played the game for some time (long time ago) and would love to come back to the game soon (yet working 7 days a week is a little hard) ;)

well I think ACE-PP or Avati had a couple tools posted for checking game files, I dont know anything about coding or checking game files or I would have done it long ago.
I just think I have good ideas on how to fix things and balance the game out a bit for a
P-server , me implementing them is another story though.
