We've done a number of tests of the new Castle Defense event and it's been a ton of fun! I feel it's time to do final tweaks to it though so that it can be added to the event rotation for next week.
Here's a rundown of how the event now works.
Goal
Castle Defense is about working with other members of the server to defend your castle against wave after wave of monsters. It's a similar idea to tower defense games except YOU are the tower! The event lasts until your base is destroyed. The more people who show up and the better they do then the better the rewards will be!
No gear? No problem!
All players have fixed damage in this event based on the type of attack they are using. Physical damage starts out at 10 damage where scatter only deals 3 for example. This is to balance large range aoe skills vs something where you need to get a bit more 'up close and personal'.
This event is balanced this way not only to make classes somewhat equal but to ensure that players of all level and strength can still be useful. It's about working together so why not include everyone?
Leveling up
As you deal damage to monsters you will gain + damage. These event levels make you stronger as the event goes on based on your participation and how well you are doing. You will definitely need these bonuses though as the monsters get more and more difficult.
Similar to how the normal scaling works, level up bonus dmg also effects each class differently. Melee damage will scale more per level than an archer but of course archers are hitting more targets so tend to level faster. We will continue tweaking these values as needed to make sure no class is overwhelmingly stronger than any other.
Resource costs
Resource costs have been removed in the event. This will definitely skew the balance of the event (not having to wait on stamina definitely makes trojans and fires stronger so we've buffed archer scaling to compensate).
XP skills work same as on any map. If you kill fast enough you can chain xp skills same as on any other map.
Bosses
Every 5 waves a boss spawns in a random lane. We will be creating an array of bosses in the future but right now the one you should be caring about is the HumanMessenger. it heals EVERY monster on the map every 3 seconds. You need to kill it as fast as possible or risk being overrun. It gives 50 CP when killed as well as a good chunk of experience.
Powerups
There's a number of places around the map where cyclone powerups spawn. Use these to quickly get around the map and boost your strength. We are looking at adding a bunch of other powerups such as the ability to freeze monsters you hit temporarily, repair gates and more!
Rewards
Every monster you kill will grant CP as well as a portion of experience. As the waves get harder, the rewards increase. We will be keeping a close eye on these rewards but they seem to be in a relatively good place right now (it's pretty normal for a player who does the event to earn 300-500 cp for their time which is quite fair)
