first of all i think this based on send packets....(because the recive packets come from server...and what u have,if it fail, is only image...)
i think this should be done with modifing the send packets...but i dont know which of them....as i saw...there is two packets which the client sends....one of them is the gems.....where it writes which gems are used....and the second is..maybe the success or fail of the upgrade but i saw this packet changing (not one for fail and other for fail...)......
i dont want to give more clues...i just want from someone to tell me if this way is right...if so..ill go to search for that..( maybe like +4 ores..
