League of Legends: 624 million US dollar revenue in 2013
The fact that microtransactions are a source of income with a lot of potential isn't a secret anymore, especially among the free-to-play industry. But what the sales figures of Riot Games, Tencent, Nexon, and many others actually look like is now being shown in an analysis of the market research firm SuperData Research. They have listed the ten worldwide highest-selling free-to-play titles of 2013. This list contains well-known games such as NCSoft's MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) "Lineage" from 1998, but also features relatively new games like "Star Wars: The Old Republic". Whoever thought that Riot's "League of Legends" would have a huge advance over others is wrong. The MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) had brought about 624 million US dollars to the bank accounts of its publisher, however, despite the enormous sum, the game is just on the second place of the list. The winner of the ranking, "Crossfire", a tactical shooter developed by the South Korean companies SmileGate and Neowiz, had made a total revenue of 957 million US dollars.

1. CrossFire (Tencent/SmileGames) - 957 million US dollar
2. League of Legends (Tencent/Riot Games) - 624 million US dollar
3. Dungeon Fighter Online (Nexon) - 426 million US dollar
4. World of Tanks ( - 372 million US dollar
5. Maplestory (Nexon) - 326 million US dollar
6. Lineage (NCSoft) - 257 million US dollar
7. World of Warcraft - (Activision/Blizzard) - 213 million US dollar
8. Star Wars: The Old Republic (Electronic Arts) - 139 million US dollar
9. Team Fortress 2 (Valve) - 139 million US dollar
10. Counter-Strike Online (Valve/Nexon) - 121 million US dollar

It should be mentioned that even though "World of Warcraft" is not a free-to-play game, it is featured on the list. This means that the gains of subscriptions of players have not been added to the number above. Are you surprised by this ranking? Which games did you expect to be on top of the list? It's your turn! Share your opinion and discuss about the rankings of "League of Legends", "Crossfire" and the other free-to-play titles.
