End of an Era: Apex Legends Shutting Down on Nintendo Switch (Gen 1)
Respawn is finally pulling the plug on the "potato mode" port to focus on Switch 2.
Let's be honest: it was a miracle that Apex Legends ran on the original Nintendo Switch at all. But as we move into the next generation, Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have decided it's time to stop looking back.
It has been officially announced that servers for the Nintendo Switch (Gen 1) version of Apex Legends will be permanently shut down on August 4, 2026.
Why is this happening?
The game isn't dying - I think it's evolving faster than the underlying hardware. EA is dropping support for the aging hardware to focus fully on the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. The hardware gap has simply become too wide to maintain parity.
The Timeline & Your Loot
If you are one of the brave ones playing on the original Switch, here is what you need to know:
- The Last Season: Season 29 will be the final content update for the original Switch.
- The End Date: When Season 30 launches on August 4, 2026, the game will no longer be playable on the old system.
- Cross-Progression: Don't panic. All your skins, heirlooms, and stats are tied to your EA Account.
- Currency: Your Apex Coins balance will carry over seamlessly to the Nintendo Switch 2 (or any other platform you link to your account).
It's a bittersweet goodbye to one of the most ambitious (and blurry) ports in history.

), I can see why it is being discontinued.
