Well-known game developers "Trion" are said to be removing the subscription required to play Rift by June the 12th. The new idea of making this game free-to-play truly does show that some companies can have a change of heart.
Currently, the only thing non-subscribers can do instead of buying a subscription is by playing "Rift - Lite edition." This is a smaller edition of the game which includes just mere fraction of the games, an example of this is that the max level obtainable is 20. “It is our goal to keep the content in Rift free - even as we move into large expansion territory,” says Bill. Trion also released information that the expansion packs and everything related to that content will also be free, and not subscriber based. Trion wants to create a free-to-play game what “truly provides value and entertainment when you choose to chip in, instead of simply adding a toll to remove pain."
So veteran players may be left with the question "what happens to us ex-subscribers?" Well, look no further. Ex-subscribers will be granted the "Patron" title, which grants players rate benefits, alongside a small amount of in-game currency.
Is this a change in the future of pay to play games? Could there be the chance of other games also going free-to-play? That question is to be left untold, and we shall wait to see what the future unveils.
