Against some other rumors, Randy Pitchford said "Borderlands 3 is currently not in development".
Even though Anthony Burch, lead writer on Borderlands, said Gearbox started thinking about a sequel Pitchford contradicted by saying: "Clean and Simple truth: The only Borderlands related game development work going on right now is for Borderlands 2".
Nevertheless Gearbox has announced that there are plans to release more campaign add-ons such as Borderlands 2 DLC which will be published around June 2013.
