an irc server is basically a server where anyone, at any time, can make a channel to chat on.
easiest way to explain it is a chatroom 'hosting' platform.
/list is a command that shows the available channels that dont have +h
/nickserv (or /msg nickserv) ((/nickserv help [[to view functions]])) is how you can register your nickname so people have a harder time taking your name, or faking being you
ex: /nickserv register [pwd] [email] ((without the brackets)
then when you connect
/nickserv identify [pwd] ((without brackets)
/chanserv is for channel registration ((/chanserv help [[to view functions))
some irc servers also let you change your hostname ie: name@[hostname]
when you do a /whois [nick] you get Name, identd@[hostname]
ex: nick, nick'
/hostserv help
/hostserv request host.name.format
/hostserv on
/hostserv off
it takes a serv op to approve it.
/join #channel
always use the # to join, its how the channels are identified, etc.
