Right, but they are not missing out because they've already taken into consideration a "loss" by offering rewards for free in the first place.

Automated systems don't cost money to run. Why would writing a small script that checks a, b and c conditions for x, y and z values cost money at all? Yeah, maybe to write it, but once it's implemented - done. Easy as pie.
As stated above, the rewards are given out for free, so from a business standpoint, they have already considered "losses" by giving players free rewards. If it affected their profits marginally, you would have seen action years ago. They are very well aware of referral abuse - yet ironically do nothing about it. Perhaps because it is insignificant and doesn't affect their profits the way you think it does?
