The more I thought about it the more I realized that running a server with the end product just to have < 100 players online throughout the day is not worth the months invested into coding. The game's not popular enough anymore to make it worth while. As the most popular servers among the community struggle to keep triple digit counts online.

Not all though, LCGN02 has at this moment 428 accounts logged in of which 199 unique ip's and its 1am on a normal tuesday

I personally don't think it is worth it to create a emulator for a game that has the source code of every era publicly available.
I mean, maybe you can create a better, faster and more efficient version, but do players care about that? They just want to play LC.
I think if you are really interested in creating a emulator i would go to mmorpg.com or something and find a game that can be popular and is just released in closed or open beta.
This way you can really say that you have something unique, and if the game suddenly becomes popular and you have a working emulator for that game without anything other being available then you can make quite some money off it.

That's pretty much what I have done. I've set my server base aside in case I wish to emulate another game in the perceivable future. It's modular enough to handle whatever game I throw at it. I've been playing a lot of Blade & Soul lately which could be a possibility later on for private server emulation.
