Sega Working on Crazy Taxi Reboot
The revitalization of Crazy Taxi is being spearheaded by Sapporo Studios, which was established by Sega in December 2021 to lead multiple gaming projects. In an article featured in Japan Times, Sega's top executive and president of Sapporo Studio, Takaya Segawa, provided insights into the roles and goals of the studio. Segawa stated, "We are collaborating with bases in Tokyo and other international locations on projects such as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage." He also mentioned, "We are involved in the production of triple-A games like Crazy Taxi," and expressed the studio's plans to develop games independently in the future.
In addition to the Crazy Taxi series, Sega is also planning new games for series such as Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Shinobi. However, the budget allocated for these projects has not yet been disclosed. The original version of Crazy Taxi was released in 1999 as a moderately successful arcade game, gaining significant popularity with its home version for the Dreamcast console in 2000.
The game achieved the distinction of being the third best-selling game on the Dreamcast system in the United States. While the series has inspired several sequels and spin-offs, there has not been a new main entry in the series since "Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller" was released for Xbox 22 years ago.
