I was reading through some old threads and I noticed Peach's thread with Copac dealing with repairing an item without unequipping. If a packet can just be logged and resent, why would that not work with sockets? My suggestion is to log the packet when an Item is socketed (someone must have a "buttload" of mets and keep throwing them at a particular equip), and then continuously sending that packet on other items. For example, since each item has its own code, the socket packet may look like 7E9A098DFG8XXXXXS7896SDFSDF (I'm sure thats close to it) and the XXXXX could be the item code. For each item, figure out the item code, plug it in, and abuse! Just a suggestion... I'm pretty positive it can't be THAT easy, but what's there to lose? If this works... oh the can of worms that would open.

When you socket an item the only packets that matter are the "remove item from inventory" and "add item to inventory" packets. There is no "socket item" packet.
Inventory/Equip Packet
18 00 <size>
F0 03 <type>
ID ID ID ID <Unique Item ID>
IT IT IT IT <Item ID>
RD RD <remaining dura>
MD MD <Max dura>
01 00 <action>
XX <Position of item> (Inventory=0, Head=1, Neck=2, Armor=3, RHwep=4, LHwep=5, Ring=6, Boot=8)
S1 S2 <Socketed gems> (00=No sock, FF=empty sock or GEM_ID)
EF 00 <Item effect>
CP <composition amount>
BL <bless>
EN <enchant>
00 00 00 00 00 00 <zeros>
Remove From Inventory
20 00 <length>
f1 03 <type>
ID ID ID ID <unique item id>
FF 00 00 00
03 00 00 00
00 00 00 00
It will remove the item first, then send it back to your inventory (upgraded or not) but with an empty socket set to FF instead of 0.
