if you think that your antivirus is the cause then better change it or disable it when you play GC.. im using avira antivir and it detects gameguard.mon as a virus for some reason.. i have to disable it before i play GC..

change your antivirus.. you can try eset nod32.. its compatible in gc

About the main.exe... it actually stops when updating.. it will stop 3-5 times then retry patching itself, try downloading the Manual patch from the website...

i'm using Windows 7 without an anti-virus software.... so i can't help you with the anti-virus thingy...
