Locally connect 2 computers with a fast connection

Which alternatives are there to the standard LAN connection? I've read about FireWire and USB, but FireWire doesn't seem to work in Win7 from what I've read (installing additional drivers *should* fix that). Is there anything else, faster than any of the above? I need something to be able to transfer huge files and masses of files from one computer to another and back.

Thanks in advance!

USB isn't faster then LAN.

Try it with W-LAN?

How is it not faster? USB2.0 is supposed to provide speeds up to 480Mbps, while most LAN connections support only up to 100Mbps (I know, newer cards support up to 1Gbps, but that's not my case). You also mustn't look at the speed at which something is read/written on a USB drive. Writing/reading to/from it will slow down things already.

Also, FireWire is supposed to supports speeds from 400Mbps to 3,2Gbps.

Once I'm home I'll test a few things. I have a reason to believe that something somewhere is capped to 10Mbps when I connect my two PCs, be it LAN or WLAN. I'll see if I can fix that problem, if not I'll most probably buy a USB/FireWire cable (if they work).

its more like a technical support thread..

btw if you install the newest driver there shouldnt be a problem with firewire - if you can use firewire its the fastest method besides 1gbit lan

get a gbit ethernet card and u are good to go

If the both PC's are connected directly and both got gbit ethernet cards u will find out that LAN is way more faster then USB.

Powerline would be another good option

That's not an option, just got my laptop and changing the card is impossible (there's still a warranty for it). Also, I'm not sure whether I can change it in the laptop.

okay, u didnt mention it in ur first post, that u own a laptop..

u could buy an ethernet card for Cardbus

something like that:

also available as an express card

Even if I buy a new ethernet card and a cardbus card, that would cost way more than a firewire/usb cable. And speeds of about 400Mbit~500Mbit should be good enough for what I need.
