Hosting spec?

Hi e-pvpers,

Just a question about what i should look at buying to host a 50-100 man private server, i thought about hosting a server for a few weeks now and completely forgot about 1 of the most important questions. "what am i going to host the server on" at first i thought about hosting it off my home pc .. but a quad core with only 6gig ram and 50mb connection was just not going to be enough. so i thought about buying a dedi but the next question in my mind what kind of specs would i need?..

if anyone out there with a history of hosting of any of the current server owners could give me a little insight as to what i should buy would be great

if someone could give me a rough idea as to what to buy and why for a server to hold around 100 players max with no lag would be great

thank you in advance xx

Who gave u the idea that it was not going to be enough? If you can keep your computer on 24/7 and have atleast 5 MB upload speed it is a lot more than enough.

was after previous experience i used to have a 20mb connection which only had around 2-3mb upload and i would reach around 20-30 ppl and they would moan about lag so i figured if a 20mb connection could hold 20-30 then a 50mb would hold 40-60 and a 100mb would hold 80 - 120 or is my theory wrong

Download speed has nothing to do with it. When people connecting to your computer upload speed is what you should be looking at. It also depends on the location of other person. As if you are in US someone from US would have good connection with under 120 ms, while someone from Europe might have 250-500+ ms. I say if you get 7mb+ upload speed your good to go.

and CPU specs? from what ive heard a good computer is also key to successful hosting, keeping in mind i will be using the pc aswell playing things as demanding as cryis and bfbc2 and the new moh this is the other reason why i think a dedi would be more appropriate

Now if you will be multi tasking while hosting a server and run things that take up a lot of memory and hogs cpu resource then i would say its not ideal to host from home pc. Though your computer has good specs. quad core and im guessing your using DDR3 ram which is great. Also from your specs I am guessing you are using Windows 7 which is also not ideal for hosting game servers. In that case getting dedi would be the best. If you only want to host Dekaron then 2GB ram(lower works but performance wont be as good), with dual core or core 2 duo cpu. If you want to host more than Dekaron then I say 4GB ram. I could easily run 3 games with 4GB Dedicated without any lag issues.

ok nice one so if i got hold of a dual core with 2gig+ram and atleast 10mb upload could host a server with 100+ players (on its own)

yes wouldn't be a problem
