Dedicated Server (Need advice)

09/12/2010 03:57 911Hacker#1
It's time to give back to our players, we have a lot in donations.

I am hoping to get a dedicated server, one that we can not only host the game server but the update server as well. I got a new map working but our currently update server would take a long time doing a 20MB update, and multiple users...would be very bad. Hence were trying to upgrade.

Goal price:
$50 a month for now

Goal specs:
Doesn't need to be a godly server, but bandwith could be a problem if were going to host the update server and the game server on one.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

thanks every1

Well with those specs you are looking for a 4GB ram dedicated with dual core at least. and don't worry about update server its nothing big, its just like a site and 1GB ram will do fine for an update server even if 8000 people are playing. But to run both you are looking at 4GB at least. Also with your current budget you can get a 4GB dedicated may be for 1 month. Normally 4GB dedicated computer are at least 69$ right now. Add windows server 2003 to that another 15-25$. But some companies have offers like 30%-50% off for first month only. So may be you can get 1 month for around 50$ but after first month you are looking at 79$+. Also that is mostly US hosts. Hosts in Europe are more expensive.

I don't really advise on getting a vps since you are sharing a computer with many other people. So it might lagg depending on what others are doing. Also 2GB vps is a no go for a server.

go dedicated, not VPS!

VPS, is okay for websites and web applications but not for gameservers! nor for heavilly used SQL servers

K, I got a game server host. I just need an updater hosting service thats fast.. For like..lets say 30MB of updates?? So people don't have to download the new client and they can just update, but new players will download the updated client and not have to update 30MBs.

Does anyone have any idea? I need links..

if your game server host is dedicated then you can use that for update server as well as all dedicated have pretty good speed.

If not you can get a cheap vps from vpsland.com , photonvps (512mb ram will do, and windows possibly)

pinkhosting.net have some sales as well with coupon pink. you can search around in google for offers and stuff.

i must say: all answers above me are totally bullshit.

looks like after all this time, none of them have learned anything about "requirements" of a fucking dekaron server from the year 2005 (or smt like that).

feel free to spent 300$ on a 16gig server with a hexacore cpu because these guys from epvpers told you that that's minimum.

L O L ! ! !

Alright now the answers above are not total bullshit. I have had at least 15 different dedicated servers some ranging from single cores 1Gb ram to Quad Core 16Gb ram. Now I ran plenty servers on them and I have plenty knowledge on running servers. Hell I could run a Dekaron server on 512 ram and have people on, no biggie. But thats not the point. The point is better performance, lesser crash rates and so on. As well as being able to do other things while running the server. Now with a 4GB ram dedicated most of Dekaron server only takes 1.5Gb of page file and 25-33% of cpu usage if your cpu is dual core. and no one is telling him to buy a god like server like a 16Gb one. though I know that you are being sarcastic there but yeah now-a-days you cant really find 512 mb ram since 1Gb sticks are so cheap. So yes it is not recommended to have god like specs but if you are going for smooth, top notch performance and a lot of people will be playing your server you gotta think about it performance wise.

Also ppl mite ask why can u run a server on 512mb dedi while a 2GB vps is no good? Well that is because Dedicated servers are stand alone pcs. Nothing else is running on them. While VPS is shared environment, while you do have your own space, processor, ram and burstable ram. If you still do not agree or believe you are more than welcome to run a server on a 2GB vps and see for yourself.

thanx for the answer ;)

in 90% of the TOS of VPServers you can read that you're not alowed to run gameservers. so yeah, you'd need a real dedicated, and not a vps.

Concerning the ram again... 4gig is way too much.
the first dekaron server i ran (difference) had exactly 1 gig ram. i had up to 150 people online at the same time. there were no lags or anything.
If ya got 2 gigs, it's ok as well. but i guarantee you, that you won't ever need more then 2 gig of ram.
In case you got 4 gigs, you couls always install the database server on the dedi, and install some kind of virtualisation software, and run 2 other dekaron servers virtualised á 1.5gig ram each. (did this as well).

You need to have in mind, that when these server files were created, the +/- performance of dedicated servers were about 1gig ram and a singlecore á 2 ghz. not more ;)
there surely were more servers running the single exes (cast for one, game for the other and maybe login for another). fact is, that well known private providers also had their server files running on machines with 2 gigs of ram. and nobody notices it ;)

the cheapest servers you can get are servers from germany.

you're also alowed to order them even if you're not living in germany.
since germany isn'T that "old" concerning technology, i guarantee you, that you'll have a quite reasonable ping even if you're living in america.
Level3 and TeliaSonera are the most common connections to outside germany.

As naruto said already you'll have to use a dedicated server with some decent specs to run SQL & the dekaron executables smooth. VPS isn't good enough to host a server smoothly.
