+N Maths For Beginners

Hey, i'm completely new to the idea of +Ning items, on my server i have just +5'd my coat, and im wondering if anyone has come up with a quick way to work out how many +Ns you need...?

3 times the number of + items used to make last +n,

exemple- 2 +items to make your gear +1
2 +items to make your gear +2
2x3 (6) +items to make your gear +3
6x3 (18) +items to make you gear +4

I think you get the point.
