Umm... I think he means how did sockets get created.
The ONLY way to make sockets before VERY FAR INTO 2.0! was to spam mets/db's on items in twin city/market.
There was no lotto, no socketing for db's (except weps), no star drills or any of that bullshit.
A double socket item was rare because you had to manage to get lightning to strike twice on the same item basically (~1/300-400 upgrades added a socket.. now do that twice on the same item lol!)
As for system msg's.... there were none back in 1.0 as far as I remember. That was added in 2.0.
