I don't think any of the current servers follow the vanilla experience from back in the day. All of them probably have custom content to some extent or messed with the game in any other form.

I'm itching to play, but none of the current servers pique my interest as they're all not back to the roots with regular HH content and no custom garbage.

Sadly the numbers of players are not real based on your info , i started to play almost for 1 month and i have to say indeed the optimization its ok..server looks fine but yes to much customs and players are less than you said... mostly they log for events and log off...

The VM its just experimental..there are bunch of problems regarding the files...its playable 70%...and stability its much important..everything released its for self usage at home and for production server it your own way ( need to be fixed querys,database,shop,skills,rebalance ,etc) ... Nobody will invest time to fix free release when you have fully source out for learning purpose .
