I know valve have started manually issuing HWID bans, but, lets say, i have a main, and an alt, i cheat on my alt, would my main then get banned, just for having the same HWID? (i wont ever open deadlock on my main)
How exactly does banning work in this game?

Well your HWID = Hardware ID Ban. Your hardware will be banned so any account with that hardware ID wont work for deadlock.
If you mean you're playing on steam and have two accounts. ALT you cheat on deadlock and get HWID banned deadlock wont work. Main should be fine to run all other games other than deadlock.
maybe someone else can clarify but that has been my experience.
