Just out of curiosity. Can I use Linux as the SQL server and then another windows machine for the server executables?

Yea, i've done that before - as long as the instance is accessible over IP it will work.

I guess you have to install the mssql studio on a different computer and link your SQL server over IP, as stated above.

yes you can do that but its not easy as windows server
