Project Masquerade - Flyff like MMO using Unity

Hello everyone, during this Covid thing, I got pretty much bored and enjoyed Frostiae's work about remaking Flyff using Unity3D.

Today, after a few weeks of digging and trying, I wanted to announce you that I'm starting to take this project of mine seriously and I would like to share it with you in hope of building a team and get the project done.

Unlike Frostiae, rather than importing Flyff's models, I took the decision to actually try and make a project that one day could be published legally.
I would like to say that I am no 'Professional Developer nor game developer' but It seems like I can get stuff done.

I started by understanding Unity and how to use it, what it offers, etc..

**Then I tried coding a few stuff, like basic flyff-ish character movement with correct animation and camera system, mobs* AI with a spawner system.

And now, here I am with a basic working networking system, server-sided everything and a basic flying system identical to flyff.

I'm aiming for a complete MMO game that looks and feel like flyff but with a modern touch in a timeline of at least 2 years. I will be posting a few tests here and there on this post for you to try out.

I'm also looking for modelers, programmers, designers, etc that are looking to invest time into this project hoping that one day it could be released, and well, you know the rest $$$$

*Mobs: Monsters
**: I have used a few free and payed assets from the unity store, especially the map and all of its models. Base networking system from youtube tutorial.

Nice idea, and I would like to see one day a project like this in unity.
The only issue I see is the license: Flyff is not just a set of models, if you build a completely different game then it is not FlyFF so it is something different. If you get inspired by FlyFF in the classes, maps, history, models, dungeons,features...then I believe they could sue you if you make a project with a high success (but as I am not experienced in legal affairs I am not really sure).

Almost all flyff players are old players who play for nostalgia because no one would play a game from 2001 with directx9 engine today...So if someone creates the same game in Unity (I am thinking about Frostiae's project like you already mentioned) and if he succeeds to attract many new players (and not only nostalgic players) then I believe Gala/Bora will say "hello sir, lawyer here..."

Maybe there is away to get inspired by FlyFF without entering in conflict with the editor or just make a server that will meet enough success to be able to pay the license and get cash back from it.

Good luck anyway ;)

Exactly, that's why I said, MMO inspired by Flyff. I mean, all MMOs in gaming history are practically the same, flyff just make it so you can fly around instead of running around, that's the only difference, so I don't really think gala could sue me for making an mmo that has flying capabilites. Hell, i'll code riding ground animals if needed lol.

My aim is basically, a new MMO with a lot of Flyff's features but with a modern touch, that said, no flyff models, no flyff maps, maybe i could write a story inspired by flyff, not exactly the same classes, etc...

It's nice to see more people starting projects like these :) Hopefully there is more of these kinds of projects out there in the future since I am really slowing down due to University lately.

Good luck :D

I thought the idea was cool, I even loaded the world and the flyff objects, but I was bored

I was playing around with a flyff project in Unity too.
I think an Flyff-styled MMO in Unity, which you can play on every device is a cool idea.

Btw: Do you know anything about the flyff.io project?
