I have linked two videos below which explain how the new Pi Currency should work, one in German and one in English. It should allow you to mine coins through a network of smatphones without stealing battery life. The current state is in phase 1 in the alpha.
The team involved in the creation of Pi-Network is Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis and holds a PhD from Standford University. As well as Dr. Chengdiao Fan who also received her PhD from Stanford University.
The current state of development is that virtual coins are distributed, which are nevertheless exchanged into the correct currency as soon as the crypto currency comes to life.
