How much do I roughly need to update to actually be worth anything here? in terms of pvp etc, I don't want to go too crazy with silkroad silk anymore as I have irl to pay for first and other shit lol

What do you mean 'update'? Do you mean 'donate'? It depends really, early game everything is on extreme high demand so it might not be the best idea to donate for everything but rather farm and use/sell things.
