how do you read private messages?

I can't seem to open the private messages in my inbox. This website is not very user-friendly...

I have private messages turned on in my settings.
I just can't open the actual message.
In the picture, where would I click to open and reply to the message?

You just need to click on that dot.
Its always the thing above the username.

Well, the dot is what the sender typed as subject for this message.
If it were anything else it would be that you have to click on.
